I. Challenges
A northwestern particle board manufacturer committed countless hours to complete reverse osmosis (RO) cleanings, occurring at least once every month without seeing any improvement. This client was at risk of shutting down the boilers and the entire plant if they did not immediately rectify the situation. Additionally, they were having trouble with their RO units that supplied feedwater to the site’s boilers. Due to the current situation, the units experienced plugs every 2 to 3 days.
II. Approach
Garratt-Callahan (G-C) water treatment professionals worked with them to supervise a Clean-In-Process (CIP) procedure on the RO units. A thorough cleaning was performed using proprietary G-C products designed for the removal of the following:
- Biofouling
- Organic fouling
- Heavy metals
- Inorganic scales
Afterward, the RO units were treated with a continuous injection of G-C’s antiscalant formula, designed to prevent deposition and fouling of the membrane’s elements.
III. Results
There was an immediate and consistent performance improvement to this client’s RO systems. After three months of stable and continuous operation, there has been no signs of degradation in the following:
G-C’s scale inhibitor, Formula 6030, improved the system’s overall performance and reduced their required cleaning cycles.
In solving this water treatment problem, G-C also prevented issues from turning into much bigger problems, thus establishing G-C as a trusted partner and supplier for all the plant’s water treatment needs. The combination of the team’s expertise and leading chemical treatments was able to yield substantial long-term performance benefits. The customer had to say this about the RO performance after G-C resolved their issues, “We’ve never seen the DP so low or the percent rejection so high.”
