Simple plants that lack chlorophyll and mostly reproduce by means of spores with the potential for one to produce many thousands of spores developing into a new fungal organism. Certain fungi are also capable of producing organic acids which can cause corrosion. In addition, they may produce anaerobic sites for SRB’s and can produce metabolic byproducts that are useful for bacteria. Most fungi associated with cooling systems live on dead organic matter and are responsible for tower wood rot. In non-wood towers, attention can be focused on other problems besides fungi. However, even in the absence of wood, fungi can still be a problem given its buildup can cause plugging of filters, tubes, etc.
