Mike Dodson is the National Director of Garratt-Callahan’s Water Safety Group, where he leads nationwide efforts to strengthen water safety and compliance. With extensive experience in healthcare facilities management and water systems, he specializes in developing practical, regulatory-aligned programs that protect public health.
He is both a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) and ASSE 12080 Certified in Legionella Water Safety & Management. His expertise includes creating ASHRAE-188 compliant Water Management Programs, guiding risk management strategies, and applying multi-barrier approaches that safeguard potable water systems against Legionella and other pathogens.
Before joining Garratt-Callahan, Mike held senior leadership roles in healthcare facilities management and engineering, overseeing acute care facilities and major medical projects across the country.

Imagine taking a relaxing shower after a day of attending seminars and ending up getting sick instead. This could be a very real scenario in the upcoming days when many hotels and even hospitals open after a long shutdown. One potential reason? Legionella pneumophila.
With the global pandemic and variants of viruses being spread via aerosolized and aspirated droplets, water safety is more critical now than at any other time in our global history. Waterborne pathogens found in water systems include building sprinklers, water features, fountains, and delivery pipes. Anywhere water is stored, left to sit, or is used intermittently, or held in pipes is subject to the creation of biofilms. These hard-to-remove biofilms allow the bacteria to grow and multiply in a protected shell until eventually released and is aerosolized through various point-of-use devices.
